Frank,

This is a tough question because, as Bruce mentioned, I am French and have a Dutch name and the rules to sort compound names are different in France and in Holland.

Dutch people would consider "van" and "der" as particles and sort my name on "Vlist" (option 2) but French people don't recognize them as such and I am more accustomed to option 1...

American people seem to be the only ones to care enough to ask! I have been asked the same question by the Library of Congress when they've indexed my first book and I really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,

Forgive me for intruding (and a belated Happy Birthday to you!). Now for something completely different ...

In the context of a project to build an all-singing, all-dancing bibliography formatting system (the Citation Style Language [CSL] created by Bruce D'Arcus), we have been discussing the display and sorting of personal names in bibliography listings. Your name has come up (<a href="http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=fbb7c5df0908230703u3159c077q5b8b8e650a1e54bd@mail.gmail.com" rel="nofollow">literally</a>) , and I wonder if you could confirm a point about your own preferences concerning the handling of your name in bibliographies. The key point concerns sort ordering. Which of the following sorts would you consider to be correct?

== Option 1 ==
van Huisen, Tanja
van der Vlist, Eric
van Vleeck, Tielman
van Voorst, James S.

== Option 2 ==
van Huisen, Tanja
van Vleeck, Tielman
van der Vlist, Eric
van Voorst, James S.

I get this error in Netbeans 6.5.1 when I run the code that I will also paste in this comment.
  file:/H:/NetBeansProjects/Roosterdiensten/src/nl/prhc/roosterdiensten/resources/normalize-excel-sheet.xslt: line 29: Attribute 'ss:Index' outside of element.

Code:
File xmlFile = new File("H:\\TEMP\\rooster-sal.xml");
        File xsltFile = new File("H:\\NetBeansProjects\\Roosterdiensten\\src\\nl\\prhc\\roosterdiensten\\resources\\normalize-excel-sheet.xslt");

        // JAXP reads data using the Source interface
        Source xmlSource = new StreamSource(xmlFile);
        Source xsltSource = new StreamSource(xsltFile);

        // the factory pattern supports different XSLT processors
        TransformerFactory transFact =
                TransformerFactory.newInstance();
        Transformer trans;
        try {
            trans = transFact.newTransformer(xsltSource);
            trans.transform(xmlSource, new StreamResult(new File("H:\\TEMP\\rooster-sal-out.xml")));
        } catch (TransformerException ex) {
            Logger.getLogger(RoosterdienstenView.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
        }
